Darion Chafin gives Incarnate Word another downfield threat
Incarnate Word receiver Darion Chafin, top, attempts to jump over the tackles by Sam Houston’s Braiden Clapton and Jaylen Thomas during the first half of a football game Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 in Huntsville, TX.As Incarnate Word returned to the practice field at 6 a.m. Tuesday on the heels of the season’s first loss, wide receiver Darion Chafin had a smile on his face and a spring in his step.
But with Morris and Ward both shifting to Washington State, and the arrival of Nicholls transfer Lindsey Scott still a few weeks away, Chafin left 2021 unsure what was in store for his final college season. Kinne said Chafin has proven to be “very sharp” mentally on top of his obvious physical tools at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds. His quick connection with Scott showed almost immediately. Chafin’s 262-yard performance during the second week of the season was at the time the largest single-game receiving total for an FCS player since 2019.Chafin has reached the end zone in every game this season, with his long arms, leaping ability and “basketball roots” making him a red-zone threat, Scott said.
Lining up alongside fellow wide receiver standouts Taylor Grimes and Brandon Porter, Chafin is a player “you love having in your arsenal,” Scott said. Scott said he’s noticed defensive backs sitting deeper in the secondary during recent weeks, forcing him to find Chafin on more “dinks and dunks” that set up for runs after the reception.“They’re not playing man versus us. They’re just not,” Kinne said. “They’re playing zone and asking us to run the ball. … When they give us the one-on-one matchup, we take it. We just hurt them, so they don’t do it very often.
