Austin Energy is among the power providers send crews to Houston to help with their recovery efforts after hurricane-like winds and tornadoes tore through the greater Houston area last week. And that was the second major storm to strike the area in recent weeks.

And while power crews from across the county help Houston get the lights back on, the Red Cross is carrying out its mission to alleviate human suffering. The -- based here in Austin -- says it has sent disaster-trained staff and volunteers to the Houston area. They'll be working closely with community and local government partners to make sure the people who are hurting get the help they need. The Red Cross says it has opened nine shelters in Houston and across Southeast Texas. Besides providing basic shelter, they will also be providing meals, snacks, health services, spiritual care, casework, and relief supplies.
