Central Pa. man suffers ‘long COVID’, grief over death of unvaccinated brother
For the most part, Lopes has been able to keep an upbeat attitude. He remains thankful for the medical care he received and grateful he survived such a close brush with death.
Common lingering problems include shortness of breath, fatigue and “brain fog.” The brain fog typically causes problems with thinking, concentrating and memory.Other longer-term problems include heart palpitations, joint pain, increased likelihood of blood clots and, in people who had severe pneumonia from COVID-19, scarring of the lungs that may be permanent.
Phillips also notes that some studies suggest people who were vaccinated after having COVID-19 experience improvement in lingering symptoms. He tore out tubes while emerging from the sedatives that kept him in a coma. For a while he believed his wife had abandoned him and he was being held against his will. At one point, he chewed through a restraining strap and swung at a nurse, thinking he must “escape.”
