The exterior of the South Bay Community Center in Los Osos, Calif., where a kink event was recently canceled following community backlash.
The event was meant to be largely educational, with workshops on how to safely engage in kink practices. Alcohol, drugs, nudity and sex were all prohibited. Despite organizers’ attempts to keep the ball low-profile, controversy erupted when a community member posted about the event on Nextdoor. “This is OUR community center. Where we go to see local theater, listen to musicians, in summer the library hosts kids’ events. …. Are we OK with it being used in this manner?” the person said in the post, which has since been deleted, according to the Tribune.
As the news spread around Nextdoor and Reddit, Los Osos community members called for large-scale protests of the event and even threatened violence toward the Gala Pride & Diversity Center, one of the event’s sponsors.
