CenterPoint Energy, the Houston region's primary electricity and natural gas utility provider, said customers should be prepared for localized outages due to strong winds associated with a winter storm sweeping its way across the state on Thursday.
Service technicians work to install transmission towers at the CenterPoint Energy power plant in Houston, Texas. Power demand in Texas is expected to set new all-time highs as heatwaves surge to levels rarely seen outside of summer, and economic growth contributes to higher usage in homes and businesses. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas has said that it has enough resources to meet demand.
"Customers should be prepared for prolonged outages if there is extensive damage to the company's systems due to the inclement weather," officials wrote. "We will have high winds that could lead to fallen branches, if branches fall on power lines that does not mean ERCOT does not have enough generation to meet demand," he said.ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, is the state's power grid manager.
