Brookfield Zoo will celebrate Dia de los Muertos Oct 28 and 29,
On Oct. 28 and 29, Brookfield Zoo will honor a Mexican tradition that celebrates the reunion of those in the here and now with loved ones in the great beyond. Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Mexican celebration that takes place Nov. 1 and 2, said Leah Rippe, vice president of marketing and communications at Brookfield Zoo. “It’s festive, like a family reunion, except the dead are the guests of honor,” she said.
We will also have an altar inside our Hamill Family Play Zoo so guests will be able to learn more about what it is that people do during this event. That will be displayed both in English and in Spanish.” Half a dozen catrinas will be in different areas of the zoo, Rippe said. “They really get into character; you can’t get them to smile at all,” she said. Guests can decorate sugar skulls while supplies last. Yes, they’re actually made from sugar, she said.
