Departing passengers at the NAIA Terminal 3 wait for official advisories on their respective flights. FILIPINO carriers Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines are tangled with supply chain problems that have forced them to ground several jets, causing delays, cancellations and immeasurable stress to affected passengers, many of whom have turned to social media.

“What is wrong with these Pratt & Whitney engines today? Engines normally can be flown for 3,000 hours before they need to go to the shop for overhauls. Today, because of design flaws, they are failing at an alarming rate. Instead of 3,000 hours, airlines that bought the engines are having to take them out of service after only 700 hours of flying,” the Cebu Pacific official said in a Viber message.

The source noted that the supply chain problem is so bad that an Indian carrier had to file for bankruptcy, “blaming problems with its Pratt & Whitney-powered fleet of A320NEOs for not being able to fly its fleet.” “We can see right away that if the Cebu Pacific fleet is 70 strong, and it keeps about three spares as insurance against disruptions, then if the unexpected happens—like Pratt & Whitney engines go sick—Cebu Pacific would run out of spares. It would then be operating a network without any backup. Thus, if another event happens that aircraft has to be grounded, then Cebu Pacific would have to cancel flights,” the official said.
