In addition to his offensive output, LeVert was a menace on the defensive side of the floor, taking on the primary responsibility of guarding Knicks guard Jalen Brunson.
LeVert pestered Brunson in the full-court, and as a result, the Cavs were able to more successfully hedge and recover on their screens early, setting a tone for how the evening would go.
LeVert first subbed in at the 6:37 mark in the first quarter and essentially forced the Cavs’ hand of keeping him in as much as possible. Isaac Okoro, who began the game as Brunson’s primary defender, was on the bench with foul trouble and remained there the rest of the evening, playing just 2 minutes, 45 seconds and missing his only shot attempt. When LeVert came in, he grabbed a rebound and hit two 3s. Brunson, meanwhile, went 1 of 5 from the field during that stretch.
It was an overall performance that prompted Darius Garland, who had his own playoff coming out party on Tuesday with 29 points, to borrow Mitchell’s buzzword.
