Jake Smith will celebrate his ninth birthday in a couple of weeks time, much to the delight of his mum Andrea, after he was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour when he was just four weeks old

Cavan mum Andrea Smith says her family try to find “positivity, even on the worst day,” as her eight-year-old son Jake is living with a brain tumour.

“For peace of mind I took him to the GP two days before Christmas. He was brought to hospital to have a CT scan, where we were told that they weren’t sure what it was and he would have to go to Temple Street.Andrea and her husband Padraic couldn’t believe the news.“It was Christmas Eve, Jake’s older brother, Joseph, and sister, Aoibhin, were at home, they were only four and six years old.

“It’s quite a surreal feeling because it all happens so quickly, yet each minute of every day is so long,” Andrea tells us. “It’s a lonely position to be in, no one in their wildest dreams or nightmares could imagine what it’s like to go through this.”Thankfully, the intensive treatments he went under slowed down the growth of the tumour and a couple of years later he was put on a trial for oral inhibitor medication and more improvements were made.“Because it wasn’t as intense or as strong as the intensive chemo it meant his hair didn’t fall out, his immune system wasn’t as low and his blood counts were good.

“We subsequently got his legs back working, so he’s able to walk short distances with a limp, but he does have a wheelchair.“He is non-verbal but he can communicate.“Jake attends Holy Family Special Needs School in Cootehill and he absolutely loves going there, as well as going for walks in the forest and to the local playground.”

“Jake isn’t well but I’m thankful we’ve had nearly nine years with him when we were told we would only have one.”
