The cost-free centers will serve children from birth to age 5 from economically disadvantaged and at-risk backgrounds.

Each center will offer a non-residential, year-round core early learning program with a curriculum designed to enhance children’s educational, social, and emotional development. It also will provide children with nutritious meals, transportation, and other needed supplies, along with support services for the families of enrolled children.The Lancaster County centers are expected to begin opening in 2026.

The first Center is currently under construction on the main campus of the Milton Hershey School in Derry Township, and is expected to open next year. The second school center at the intersection of North Sixth and Muench Streets in Harrisburg is expected to open in 2024.will open at a site near Oberlin and Fulling Mill roads in Lower Swatara Township in 2025.

Milton and Catherine Hershey, founders of the Milton Hershey School, had connections to Lancaster County. Milton Hershey spent his childhood in Bart Township, Lancaster County and, as an adult, opened the Lancaster Caramel Company. Lancaster County is also where Milton and Catherine Hershey spent the early years of their marriage and invested in the Lancaster community through their support of St.
