All registered voters are eligible to cast ballots this week, even if they didn’t vote in the March 1 primary. Anyone who did head to the ballot box in March must vote for the same party they selected two months ago. The race for attorney general is arguably the hottest contest on both sides of the aisle. On the Republican side, incumbent Ken Paxton faces Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who forced a runoff in March after earning about 23 percent of the vote in the primary.
Paxton, who earned nearly 43 percent of the vote in the primary, has faced an uphill battle in his bid for a third term as Texas’ top attorney. Caught up in years-long legal challenges, Paxton initially faced three GOP opponents.Democrats, meanwhile, will choose between civil rights lawyer Rochelle Garza and former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski. Garza captured 43 percent of the vote in the March primary, to Jaworski’s 20 percent.
Democratic voters will also pick their nominee in the lieutenant governor’s race. Mike Collier, a Houston accountant, is seeking a second chance to unseat incumbent Republican Dan Patrick; but first, he has to succeed in the runoff against state Rep. Michelle Beckley of Carrollton.Farther down the ballot, voters in Texas’ 28th Congressional District will select both the Republican and Democratic nominees. The seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo.
