Ben McKay has made a big call as he weighs up competing offers worth upwards of $700,000 per year.
The Swans have money to spend in their salary cap after Buddy Franklin, Paddy McCartin and Tom Hickey retired.The bidding war is set to ensure the Kangaroos, who already own pick No.2 and another first-round selection for this year’s draft, earn pick No.3 as compensation from the AFL.
The Bombers and Hawks are both in need of a readymade defender, with McKay suiting their timelines as rebuilding teams with an eye on reaching the finals in the near future. Essendon, led by McKay’s former North coach Brad Scott, need to replace Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, who wants to return home to South Australia to play with Port Adelaide.
McKay would add much-needed height to Hawthorn’s back six and help ease the pressure on captain James Sicily.
