Cartoon Network and Adult Swim are safe amidst all of the dramatic changes at Warner Bros. Discovery according to the president of those networks.
President of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Michael Ouweleen says that both networks are safe following shakeups at Warner Bros. Discovery. Ever since Warner Bros. and Discovery's merger and David Zaslav's induction as CEO, things have not been smooth for the media giant. Positive news such as James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC is contradicted by negative news such as HBO Max having several of its titles removed or outright canceled before they could even enter production.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Despite the lack of news from Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, the networks' president has come out to assure those that they are not going anywhere. Ouweleen spoke with Variety about his position at Warner Bros. Discovery and to reveal the renewal of Batwheels, which he insists is a huge hit on HBO Max.
When I joined the network [in 1996], to our minds it wasn’t a kid network, it was an animation network. We said it was for a psychographic, not a demographic. The best animation works on a couple levels and works for a couple of different audiences at once. And I think that’s where Cartoon Network proper is coming back around to.
Despite the supposed lack of exposure from Warner Bros. Discovery, both networks still technically bring in revenue for the media giant. Ouweleen also admitting that most of their viewership is from adults gives credence to the argument that animation is not just for kids, as big-name studios such as Disney and even the Oscars have wrongly claimed so in the past.
While Ouweleen managed to give a satisfying update on the state of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, there are still several hurdles that they need to overcome. With Zaslav's insistence that original content be moved elsewhere, such as the case with Batman: Caped Crusader, and the merging of Cartoon Network Studios with Warner Bros. Animation, there is still concern over the new layout and if it will be just as profitable as it once was before. Despite all this, Warner Bros.
