Vela scores in the 72nd minute, Biuk adds a goal 10 minutes later and José Cifuentes scores in stoppage time as the hosts move within two points of the Western Conference leaders with a 3-0 win.

LOS ANGELES — Three second-half goals propelled the Los Angeles Football Club to an important victory over Western Conference leader St. Louis City SC on Wednesday night.

Playing behind a back line that did not include MLS All-Star Tim Parker for only the third time in St. Louis’ 22 regular-season matches, Swiss goalkeeper Roman Burki, the team’s other All-Star, was searching for his third consecutive shutout win. “It took a lot of hard work in that first hour to really take the wind out of their sails and then the game opens up,” LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said. “We believe we can do that against every team. Our quality will come out in the end, and it did.”

For Biuk, who entered the match in place of Mateusz Bogusz at the hour mark, leading to several strong attacking combinations, it was the young Croatian’s third goal this year. Ordaz’s floated pass to Cifuentes at the top of the St. Louis box will go down as the first MLS assist for the 19-year-old homegrown player.

The dominant finish improved LAFC’s record against MLS expansion teams to 7-0, having outscored St. Louis, Cincinnati, Miami, Austin and Charlotte by a combined 17-1.
