Carl Nassib, a former Cleveland Browns defensive end and the first openly gay player in the NFL, announced his retirement from football in a social media post Wednesday.
“I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now,” Nassib said in a June 2021“I feel especially thankful to have had so much support when many who came before -- and many even now -- do not,” he wrote. “I stand on the shoulders of giants, incredible people who paved the way for me to have this opportunity.”
Following his two-year stint with the Browns, Nassib also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders. He finishes his seven-year NFL career with 99 games played, including 38 starts, 187 tackles, 25.5 sacks, 19 pass deflections, four forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered.
