Gold Trip would be the first racehorse to win back-to-back Melbourne Cups since Makybe Diva in 2005 - and the first to carry more than 58 kilograms - if he can pull off an upset.
Noel Greenhalgh, the part-owner of Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip, knows a thing or two about buying horses.
Tainer Ciaron Maher isn’t fazed about the extra weight Gold Trip will carry – it’s only one more kilogram than last year’s race. “We paid a lot of money for Gold Trip,” he said. “He wasn’t a cheap horse, but we knew we were buying a talented horse.Chris Mr Greenhalgh and his wife will be joined by both daughters, Sarah and Laura, for the first time at a race on Tuesday. But Gold Trip isn’t the only horse they’ve got their eyes on. Mr Greenhalgh also has a stake in three other runners in the Cup – Soulcombe, Virtuous Circle and Sheraz.
World-class jockey Joao Moreira – who has a long association with trainer Waller – is booked to ride the gelding.“We think a live chance,” Mr O’Brien, chairman of media agency Atomic 212, said. “The preparation that Chris Waller and his team have put into him in the last 14 months … no stone is unturned.”
