So after filling out a little paperwork for a nursing agency that offers contract work to those willing to fill vacancies, she packed her scrubs and departed for the Yukon capital.Article content“It was very overwhelming right off the bat because my scope of practice was a lot larger,” she said, noting that the situation very quickly became trial by fire, as she only had one shift of orientation.

All told, there were some drawbacks, like the lack of a pension and benefits through the agency — a point pressed on recently by Saskatchewan Union of Nurses president Tracy Zambory, who is concerned that an “untenable,” full-time nursing landscape is pushing nurses toward agency work.Since she returned home, she’s been recommending a stint on the road to some of her colleagues.

She herself would like to see the East coast, but her travel plans are on hold right now, as she is completing more schooling to become an RN.In her hometown, rural but hardly remote, they too have experienced nurse shortages and have leaned on travelling nurses to fill the gap — something relatively recent according to Halonen, who says neither she nor her mother who worked there as a nurse for many years, has seen before.
