Two men have avoided serious injury when a freight train steamrolled a ute stranded at a level crossing in Perth ’s east. 7 NEWS secured video of the moment the ute was smashed into pieces by the impact in Herne Hill about 5pm on Thursday.

Lucky escape as freight train smashes ute into pieces. There was an initial crash between a Ford Ranger ute and a Haval sedan near the intersection of Oakover Rd and Railway Pde, leaving the ute on the level crossing. A short time later a CBH Group freight train came through, smashing through the ute on the Merredin to Kwinana line. “It split in half. It was just like if you sliced it down the middle where the train meets the cab, that’s pretty much it,” one witness told 7NEWS.
