Picard served as a bridge officer on the Stargazer until he took over command in 2333 after the captain and first officer were killed.
Unlike many of the captains before him, the Enterprise was not Picard's first command assignment. When Picard took over command of the newly commissioned USS Enterprise-D in 2363, he was already a dedicated Starfleet captain with many years of experience under his belt. Over the course of TNG, only snippets were revealed about Jean-Luc's past on the Stargazer, although several Star Trek tie-in novels do delve into that period of Picard's life.
In a move that would later be dubbed the Picard Maneuver, Picard engaged warp speed for a split second which caused the Ferengi sensors to detect the Stargazer in two places at once. With the Ferengi officers momentarily confused, Picard fired on the ship and destroyed it. Because of still-burning fires and the heavy damage to the Stargazer, Picard was forced to give the order to abandon ship.
How Being Stargazer Captain Set Up Picard's Star Trek Future While on the Stargazer, Jean-Luc met and befriended Lieutenant Jack R. Crusher , husband of Dr. Beverly Crusher . In 2353, Captain Picard led an away mission that resulted in Jack Crusher's death, and Picard personally met with Beverly to deliver the news. Years later, Picard and Beverly would remain friends and eventually developed a mutual attraction for one another.
Picard's time on the Stargazer and the relationships he formed there not only set up his future son but also influenced his style of command. After Picard was forced to destroy the Ferengi vessel at the Battle of Maxia, he felt guilt and wondered if there was any other way he could have handled the situation. While Picard likely made the best decision he could have under the circumstances, his later tendency toward diplomacy may have been influenced by that moment.
