'Captain Marvel' earns $78 million in early international box office

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first stand-alone female superhero movie starring Brie Larson as the titular Air Force pilot turned superhuman pointedly opened on March 8, the date set to celebrate women’s achievements while also calling for greater gender equality.

In comparison, the Patty Jenkins-directed “Wonder Woman,” DC’s first female-fronted superhero movie, opened to $103.3 million domestically in June 2017 before lassoing more than $821 million world-wide. Captain Marvel’s origin story set in the 90s is actually a prequel to all of the “Iron Man,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “Avengers” movies, and she is being set up as the ringer called in to defeat the evil Thanos after that bleak “Avengers: Infinity War” cliffhanger last year wiped out half of the population of the universe — and several beloved Marvel heroes, to boot. So “Captain Marvel” is also set up as a lead-in to the much anticipated “Avengers: Endgame” hitting in May.

This has exposed her and “Captain Marvel” to early backlash, particular after telling Marie Claire that she had noticed that most of the movie critics and entertainment reporters interviewing her during press tours were white and male. “Moving forward, I decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive,” said Larson — and those statements have been taken out of context by many to mean that she doesn’t want white men interviewing her or reviewing films.
