The Wilderness Search and Rescue confirmed that it had to activate a rescue team on Thursday, 31 March after a member of a Kloofing party fell while abseiling in the Krom River Kloof in Du Toitskloof.
Kloofing, which is the South African term for canyoneering, involves moving down a steep watercourse or kloof using a variety of outdoor activities such as walking, jumping, abseiling, swimming and bouldering. According to WSAR, the Western Cape Department of Health EMS / Air Mercy Service helicopter was also dispatched, locating the patient in the upper reaches of the kloof.
“The rescue team were hoisted near to the patient, where they were able to treat and prepare him for extraction. The patient was hoisted out of the kloof in a stretcher and flown to a landing area at the Du Toitskloof Lodge. He was later transferred to the hospital by ambulance,” WSAR said.Picture: Brent Russell & Marc Lawson
