Rain is forecast to hit the fire-hit region in the next couple of days but it will likely bring blaze-starting lightning strikes with it.
As teams surveyed the damage around the neighbourhoods, they found 50 buildings had been destroyed, Mr Brolund said.
British Columbia's Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Bowinn Ma said 62,000 people were under either evacuation orders or an evacuation alert, which warned residents to be ready to flee.Firefighters are also battling a wildfire near the capital of the Northwest Territories and have shifted from defence to offence after a weekend of cooler temperatures, favourable winds and some rain.
Until now, firefighters had mostly focused on trying to stop the spread or reduce the intensity of the flames near Yellowknife."A lot of the tactics we've been using have been more indirect," he said."In this case, we'd be looking at putting out fire right on the perimeter, which is more of an offensive strategy."
Yellowknife officials warned city employees, first responders and volunteers who remained behind to be aware of wildlife displaced by the wildfires.
