Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said on Jan. 26 that the central bank would soon start raising the policy interest rate from a record low of 0.25% to curb inflation. Canadian rate-setters’ next policy meeting will be held on March 2.
The Canadian economy shed 200,100 jobs in January, Statistics Canada said on Feb 4. The unemployment rate rose 0.5 percentage points to 6.5%, the first increase since April 2021, as an Omicron-driven wave of Covid-19 infections peaked.
