Canada bans Boeing 737 Max 8 from its airspace
Transport Canada has issued a safety notice restricting commercial use of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 aircrafts involved in the Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed 157.
Canada’s Transport Minister Marc Garneau said during a press conference Wednesday that new information prompted the government to issue a safety notice preventing any commercial passenger flights from arriving, departing or overflying Canadian airspace, effectively grounding the Boeing jet in Canada.
Canada had been facing increased pressure to ground the jet, after authorities around the world announced grounding orders, including the European Union Aviation Safety Agency , as well as authorities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland and the Netherlands. Sunwing Airlines released a statement late Tuesday that it would temporarily suspend operations of its four Boeing 737 Max 8 jets.
The Canadian government had initially held off on making a decision before the cause of the crash was determined. Garneau had told reporters in Montreal on Tuesday that he had no plans to ground Canada’s fleet of 737 Max 8 aircraft, but that “all options are on the table.”
