Tristan Thompson's grit helped Cleveland survive the playoff grind from 2014-18. Now he's back to teach the new Cavs his old tricks.
Last time Thompson wore wine and gold, the East ran through Cleveland. LeBron James’ Cavs won their conference four straight seasons and posted a 47-11 postseason record against conference opponents. They won the title in 2016 after falling behind 3-1 in the NBA Finals. And they taught Thompson invaluable playoff lessons that he plans to share with a roster well restocked since Cleveland’s last Finals trip in, wait, give him a second.
Altman said Monday he wanted to be “intentional” with Cleveland’s 14th roster spot, and he made his intentions clear by giving it to Thompson. By choosing the former champion, Altman chose the toughness Cleveland lacked against the Knicks. He prioritized the pride Thompson takes in Cleveland’s championship comeback -- “Our team should be in the basketball Hall of Fame,” Thompson said. And Altman added a veteran voice to a team stocked with younger sponges.
When Cleveland owned the East, the Cavs signed Kendrick Perkins to push Thompson. Now Thompson is prodding Mobley, who accepts the veteran’s coaching without any response. Just a head nod and an understanding.
