MSEditorial Can the new top cop redeem the PNP image? The Philippine National Police has a new chief in General Benjamin Acorda Jr.
He was chosen by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to lead the 228,000-strong law enforcement agency on the basis of his credentials, track record and experience as a police official in various capacities after graduating from the Philippine Military Academy in 1991, or 32 years ago.
General Acorda’s acceptance speech during the change-of-command ceremony last Monday at Camp Crame gives us an indication of what would be his priorities during his tenure. The former chief of the PNP Directorate for Intelligence promised to continue his predecessor’s campaign to cleanse the police organization of scalawags.
Acorda, who holds a Master’s Degree in Management from the Philippine Christian University, assumes the PNP leadership without having been involved in any major controversy in a career spanning more than three decades.
