The Sriracha shortage has led to sky-high prices and bottles disappearing from restaurants. It's caused by drought-fueled supply chain issues that experts say are becoming more common.
In a statement, the Irwindale company said it is “still experiencing a shortage of raw material” and has no estimate when supplies will return. It produced some Sriracha in the fall, but output was limited.
“Climate change is the ultimate driver, but it’s also how we manage the water equitably,” Nabhan said. “Any politician is going to be reluctant to allocate less water, but we’re not asking farmers to transition to more efficient irrigation techniques.” Kansas, one of the largest sources of hard red winter wheat, is projected to have a historically weak crop this year because of drought conditions,“Right now we’re seeing the droughts hit right straight up the Midwest. If you were to draw a line from Texas, from Mexico, just go straight north, all the way up through to Minnesota and the Dakotas,” Hiatt said.
Huy Fong Foods declined an interview request and said in a statement that it couldn’t specify which markets will receive more of its products.Kristin Nguyen, chef and owner at Garlic and Chives, a Michelin-recommended Asian fusion restaurant in Garden Grove’s Little Saigon, didn’t think about the cost of Sriracha sauce before the shortage. But the average bottles are now sold at a premium.
