Can STEM education be taught through art? One nonprofit is proving that it can paid Oracle
To help prepare children for the science, technology, engineering, and math jobs of the future, “we’re teaching them about design thinking, pattern recognition, problem solving, and innovation,” saysArt in Action helps 85,000 kids get access to art education. The San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit offers more than 150 lessons to bring arts education to K-8 students, many of whom attend schools that have cut back on the arts.
Since joining Art in Action nearly two years ago, Darby has helped launch five new programs, including Art in STEAM , Art in Social Justice, and Art in Healing—designed for kids experiencing terminal illness or trauma, who have family members who are incarcerated, or have been victims of gun violence.
Loading financials from spreadsheets into its old software package would take several hours, Darby recalls, “and running reports was virtually impossible, it just took too much time.” Donors understandably expected reporting of how their funds were being allocated, but that old accounting app ran on a single on-premises server that required manual entry of every donor data, invoices, and purchase orders, taking weeks to prepare and share any meaningful insight.
“It all goes into our ‘supplybrary’,” says Darby, who notes that NetSuite not only helps track the different types of inventory the nonprofit has on hand, but also helps prioritize those upcycled materials to be pulled and packed first.
