A young lady from Columbus named Mary Catherine Campbell is an important part of the early history of the event.

The Miss America pageant seeks out a young woman and rewards her with recognition as one of the most beautiful and talented people in our country.

On Feb. 1, 1919, a beauty pageant was held in the Chu Chin Chow Ball Room of the Hotel des Artistes in New York City. The winner, Edith Hyde Robbins McCartney, was called “Miss America.” However, this title and pageant had nothing to do with what soon would follow in New Jersey. This event was quite successful, and for the following year the local Businessmen’s League planned to repeat it as a beauty pageant or in the terms of the time as a “bather’s review.” On Sept. 8, 1921, 100,000 people gathered on the Boardwalk and watched as nine contestants passed by. The winner was Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C. She was 16 when she was crowned as the “Golden Mermaid” and presented with $100.

Campbell became Miss Columbus over a field of 170 other women. She graduated from East High School in February 1922 and entered Ohio State University as an art major after her selection as Miss America. She was the first high school graduate and college student to become Miss America.
