Lawyers for the victims called it the largest cash payment by any Catholic diocese in bankruptcy to date.
. Those individuals, now all adults, had filed claims as part of the federal bankruptcy proceedings.
“My prayers go out to all survivors of abuse and I pledge my continuing commitment to ensure that this terrible chapter in the history of the Diocese of Camden…never happens again,” he said in a statement. The average payment, they added, stood in “stark contrast” to the proposed settlement by the Boy Scouts of America, where claimants were expected to receive an average of about $31,000. That agreement has yet to be approved by the judge overseeing the Boy Scouts bankruptcy.
Attorneys, meanwhile, called the battle for compensation “hard-fought,” and said the settlement was long-overdue. He added that the settlement may provide a model for other pending Catholic bankruptcies arising from claims for child sexual abuse. Prominent sexual abuse attorney Jeff Anderson of Jeff Anderson & Associates, whose Minnesota law firm represented more than 70 of those who filed lawsuits against the Diocese of Camden, said that in addition to the $87.5 million provided by the diocese, survivors and their attorneys still have the opportunity to take legal action against insurance companies that represent the diocese.
