Advocates are urging people to have more conversations about sex – the good, the bad and the ugly – in a bid to help recognition of intimate partner sexual violence.

And due to lack of awareness about what constitutes sexual violence in intimate partner relationships, Ms Watt says many victims don't recognise that they have experienced abuse."They might not realise that forced sex, for example, which is basically rape, even within a relationship is a part of violence and coercive control.

"They might name the fact that he's taken all her money, or he won't let her see her friends, or he's always got the keys to the car, but she might not say, 'Oh and by the way when it comes to sex, he always forces himself on me.'"outlines the need for more support and training for case workers in how to assess intimate partner sexual violence, it acknowledges, that the stigma and shame attached to this form of sexual violence make it harder to uncover.

"It's one thing to get men to call us, it's something their very ashamed about, and we go to great lengths to try and encourage people to call, but we know a lot of people just won't," Ms Watt said.Central Highlands Integrated Family Violence Committee advisor Jess Cadwaller said even in her own personal life, she was surprised by how commonly women seemed to miss or have trouble naming acts of sexual violence done to them.

The report recommends improved and earlier assessment of the presence of intimate partner sexual violence. "We need everyone to be holding the line around what constitutes consent, and what doesn't, and being really clear about where those lines are, in conversations with their mates, for example," she said."The more conversations we have about what constitutes sex, and good sex and ethics, and sex that is actually not sex anymore because it's violence, I think with a little bit less shame around some of these elements, we might actually shift things.
