A students-led uprising in Bangladesh that ousted the authoritarian Awami League government of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has triggered calls for reforms in Church-run financial organizations in the country.Cardinal Zuppi: Forgiveness and justice are the path to peace

While the CCCUL has about 45,000 members and total assets estimated at US$108.3 million, the MCCHSL has nearly 30,000 members with estimated total assets of US$250 million. Last week, D’Cruze presided over two meetings between Christian leaders at the Archbishop’s House on Aug. 16 and 18 where he called for unity among Christians, sources confirmed.

Christian cooperatives are credited for the socio-economic development of the community. However, leadership rivalries in these organizations are blamed for sowing divisions within the Christian community. There are also allegations of raising land prices of the housing society through irregularities, he told UCA News.

Steve Joseph Costa, one of the accused, spent one month in jail. He was later released as the allegation was not proven. Archbishop D’Cruze said he asked the current leadership of the two organizations to reinstate the membership of those who lost it.“There is malpractice in elections at many financial institutions that must end to bury divisions. The members also need to actively participate in the cooperatives’ activities and play a watchdog role,” he said.

Christians run one university, 18 colleges, 80 secondary schools and nearly 1000 primary and pre-primary schools serving nearly 300,000 students, mostly Muslims, annually, according to the Bangladesh Catholic Education Board.
