The IRS recently announced that about $1.5 billion in tax refund dollars from 2019 remain unclaimed.

, the number of people with unclaimed 2019 tax refund dollars is 144,700. The IRS estimates that, together, those people may be owed $142 million, with the average potential return in the state estimated to be $856. Those with unclaimed tax returns from 2019 have until July 17 of this year to get their money.

“With the pandemic taking place when the 2019 tax returns were originally due, people faced extremely unusual situations. People may have simply forgotten about tax refunds with the deadline that year postponed all the way into July,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said. “We frequently see students, part-time workers and others with little income overlook filing a tax return and never realize they may be owed a refund.

Under the law, folks typically have three years to file their tax returns and claim their refunds. If they don't, their money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury. Normally, the filing deadline for old returns comes in April — when current returns are due — but the IRS extended the deadline for 2019 to July of this year because of the pandemic.

A spokesperson for the IRS told SFGATE that figures for how many people have unclaimed tax returns from 2020 and 2021 were not yet available. You can request copies of your W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 from your employer or bank, or your can request a free wage and income transcript at
