Recent census data show urban California counties shrunk in population and rural counties grew, but trends are moving back to the pre-pandemic status quo.

San Luis Obispo County, home to Morro Rock, was in the top 10 California counties that gained the most population between July 2021 and July 2022.and San Francisco showed the biggest percentage losses. But the population loss tapped off the following year in those urban counties in comparison to rural counties.
