A man serving six years in state prison for robbery and carjacking has filed a $10 million claim against the city of Long Beach, charging that two officers gave him conflicting commands beforeLeonides Enriquez, 29, of Bellflower says the Aug. 8, 2021, shooting left him in a coma for more than two months and with permanent injuries, according to the claim filed at City Hall, which can be a precursor to a lawsuit.

Enriquez admitted he was under the influence of Xanax, fentanyl and methamphetamine that night, but he also accused officers of deliberately shouting different commands to confuse him. Officers would learned Enriquez had been suspected of a series of crimes in the hour leading up to the shooting, police said, including shooting at a woman as she drove in Bellflower and carjacking a family of four at gunpoint. There were no reports of injuries of these victims. He was also involved in a crash at Del Amo Boulevard and Cherry Avenue in Long Beach. That victim declined to be hospitalized.
