This is the first time Cale Makar has been issued supplemental discipline by the NHL. The timing? With the Avs needing a Game 5 win in a deadlocked playoff series against the Seattle Kraken.

“It is important to note that McCann is in no way eligible to be checked on this play,” a Player Safety rep said in the video. “Makar finishes this hit well outside the allowable window for finishing a check. In addition, it is clear that Makar knows McCann is not in possession of the puck when he decides to deliver this hit.

Makar was hailed as the best defenseman in the game and MVP of the playoffs as the Norris and Conn Smythe trophy winner in 2022. During their run to the Stanley Cup title a year ago, every Avalanche playoff series was either over or 3-1 Colorado after four games. But now the Avs are locked 2-2 with Seattle after Jordan Eberle’s overtime goal Monday. It snapped a 12-game road win streak for the Avs, who now must win two of three games without Makar for one of them. Game 6 will be back at Climate Pledge Arena, where Makar was greeted with boos every time he touched the puck in the final two periods of Game 4. Avs forward Valeri Nichushkin is also out indefinitely, and captain Gabriel Landeskog has been shut down for the season.

On Monday night, coach Jared Bednar said he did not fear a suspension would be issued by the league. He cited that Makar’s penalty was reduced from a five-minute major to a two-minute minor on the ice. Hakstol disagreed with the officials’ decision to reduce the severity.
