Cade Smith fanned four straight batters in his postseason debut as the Guardians captured the ALDS opener.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cade Smith and the Guardians bullpen have been so consistently good this season that Saturday’s dominant performance against Detroit in Game 1 of the American League Division Series has come to be expected. As ridiculous as that sounds.
“But there’s no doubt about it, I’m excited,” Smith said. “This is what we’re here to do. It’s what we love to do. We’ve been looking forward to this. It’s why you put in the work and it’s time to let it just flow.” Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis and Emmanuel Clase each tossed a scoreless inning, with Herrin’s leadoff walk to Jake Rogers in the seventh representing the only Detroit batter to reach base.“Giving the ball up with him, I’ve done it a bunch of times this year where I come out in the middle of an inning and Cade comes in, and I feel like almost every time he shut the door,” Bibee said. “So I come out of the game extremely confident that he’s going to get the job done.
Vogt said the way Saturday’s game unfolded, it allowed him to use all four pitchers since they had not appeared in a game for more than a week. “Obviously they’re good, you know, and this is their best,” Hinch said. “You’ve got an All-Star at the top who sets the tone and a beast in the middle and a lot of different guys throughout that put pressure on you, and then we saw their big bullpen. This is obviously Game 1, and we get a day off to reset. We’ve been really good at it. And we plan to throw our best out there in Game 2.”
