AMID all the fluff and frills of Valentine's Day, February 14 in the Philippines is actually notable for being the birthday of one its most enduring politicians -- Juan Ponce Enrile's birthday.Enrile, former senator and now chief presidential legal counsel, turned 99 today, Tuesday, a year shy of a century.In a Facebook post, Enrile expressed his gratitude to all who greeted him as he reached his milestone birthday.
The lawyer, a veteran of both the legislative and executive branches of government, was appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as his legal counsel in June last year.Enrile was first recruited by the President's father and namesake, then president Ferdinand Marcos, when he won against reelectionist Diosdado Macapagal in the 1965 election.He was the elder Marcos' first Finance secretary for two years, from 1966 to 1968, then Justice secretary from 1968 to 1971.
