Preposterous as it may sound considering the winter’s events, there once was a time the

The point: There was more than one way to attack a problem. The Rangers felt a Gold Glover at third base could help the pitching and his offense couldn’t hurt . The Rangers had engaged Eovaldi early in the offseason, but then Jacob deGrom happened and Andrew Heaney, too, and before you knew it, Young had acquired four starters and Eovaldi was still on the market. The Rangers put pitching on hold for a moment to pursue outfielder Michael Conforto, with whom they’d had conversations dating to the summer.

The Rangers didn’t spend a lot of time on the possibility of a six-man rotation. Or moving Odorizzi to the bullpen. Or potentially flipping him in a deal for an outfielder. All are possible outcomes. In the meantime, they have more pitching. They’ll figure out the rest. We say previously because Young has found five in his first winter helming the team. Maybe it’s beginner’s luck; maybe it’s not. But finding out next winter would come with the need to likely pay any free agent more than $16 million Eovaldi would earn in 2024 for, likely, a lesser arm. It would also represent a potential one-year step forward for a possible step back. Young is all about sustainability.
