Three Deer Park STYFA teams earn Super Bowl berths
Despite Colts defenders all around him, Junior Tiger Leo Hayes motors for a nine-yard gain in the fourth quarter, depositing the team on the Colts 40-yard line.FRIENDSWOOD - While surprises were ending the campaign of the older youth football teams from the Deer Park Seminoles and Tigers organizations, it was the younger teams that secured berths to the coveted South Texas Youth Football Association Super Bowl on Saturday.
"They like to run inside on us," said Sophomore Tigers running back Trevor Alexander, already giving a scouting report on their Super Bowl foe, a team the Tigers defeated in the regular season. The semifinal contest was over at halftime and the Tigers leading 27-0. In addition to Alexander contributing to the fast lead, Gregory Plummer caught a Hyland touchdown pass, making Dickinson pay for another fumble. Then on the final play of the first half, Hyland connected with Randy Weaver for a pretty 20-yard strike for six points. Hyland then ran in the PAT.
Not counting flag football and Pee Wee, the Senior Division will be the only division where the top two seeds won't be playing at the Super Bowl. The Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior Divisions will all have their No. 1 and 2 ranked teams at Super Bowl Saturday. The Seminoles owned a 20-14 lead in the third quarter after a Beckett Holbrook touchdown run of three yards, the result of a fumble recovery. But in a matter of seconds, the Colts tied the game thanks to a score from Zaedrian Lewis and his two-point conversion kick with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Lewis accounted for 10 of Friendswood's 22 points.
Two words describe the Seminoles' 24-0 defeat to the Pearland Oilers. Diezel John. The Pearland Oiler was a one-boy wrecking crew. He scored the team's opening three touchdowns, including a pick-6 that sealed the deal, creating an 18-0 deficit for the Seminoles. His second touchdown was a 77-yard score.
