Ex-Commissioner Bush sees better days for Alamo after squabbles, setbacks, tweaks to project
Bush praised the DRT for its devotion to the Alamo, having restored its ruins and making it the most visited historic site in the state.
Under Bush, the Land Office secured some $150 million in legislative appropriations for the Alamo plan and in-depth studies to ensure preservation of its church and Long Barrack, as well as $5 million for emergency upgrades — repairing crumbling awnings and broken sidewalks, and addressing fire code violations and other safety issues.before it was at the center of a famous siege and battle for Texas independence.
As a controversial proposal to repair and move the Cenotaph emerged, Bush supported the concept as a means of restoring the site’s 1836 appearance. But he endured criticism on both sides, from those who wanted him to vocally support relocation and opponents who chanted, “Not one inch!” “I’ve just learned — maybe it’s part of my Bush family heritage — that there’s going to be criticism in anything you do in modern-day politics,” he said.
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick was staunchly against the relocation and called the Alamo plan “badly off track” in a March 2020 news release. He and Bush feuded for more than a year. Bush, whose mother was born in Mexico, went on Twitter to blast an unfounded rumor that he was secretly planning to build a statue of Santa Anna near the Alamo, calling it “an outright lie” and “flat-out racist.
