She’s leaving her post after nearly 10 years to work at the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, an organization that supports early-stage, high-impact social enterprises.
Kuzmich, 46, who started as executive director at the institute in 2013, said she will miss working with former President Bush and his wife, Laura. She was on the staff of his White House Domestic Policy Council and was deputy chief of staff and assistant secretary for legislation and congressional affairs at the U.S. Department of Education.
Kramer, an assistant secretary of state in the Bush administration, said he’s taking over an organization “that is working really well and effectively, so there’s no need for a revolution.” He plans to pick up where Kuzmich left off, with a focus on strengthening domestic democracy.Looking back, Kuzmich attributes her successes to “plain old hard work” and “curiosity.” She started on Capitol Hill as an intern and ended up working for two U.S. Senators on domestic policy issues.
“The more recent presidents have been younger as they’ve left office, so Clinton, Bush, Obama, you know, had a lot more runway, and they still want to do things,” she said. “You look back and some of the older presidents, they all have a foundation, but they’re often pretty small.” “They give unrestricted funding, which is important, because these early-stage organizations, the last thing they need is to have to figure out their metrics and their deliverables and write a grant report,” Kuzmich said.

Kelly Evans: The Fed Pivot Is WorkingExactly three weeks ago today, the Fed came out with a “surprisingly” large 75-basis-point rate hike.
