Investors are bracing for a cautious start to 2025, with concerns over trade protectionism and the US President Inauguration Day shaping market sentiment. Malaysia's Bursa Malaysia is expected to remain cautious, facing potential risks from geopolitical tensions and global economic headwinds.
Bursa Malaysia is expected to remain cautious this week as investors prepare for a cautious start to 2025. The focus is on the US President Inauguration Day on January 20. An analyst, Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management, highlighted the potential for trade protectionism to trigger stagflation, impacting global economic growth and posing risks for Asian exporters.
Although primarily targeting China, neighboring economies with strong export links to China, like Malaysia, could experience initial repercussions. Innes stated that this geopolitical tension might overshadow the positive outlook for Malaysia's market and economy in the first quarter of 2025, creating uncertainty in the region. Mohd Sedek Jantan, head of investment research at UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd, noted that January 10 will be significant for both Malaysian and US markets. Malaysia will see the release of November data on manufacturing statistics, the industrial production index, labor force statistics, and wholesale and retail trade. While these are lagging indicators, they are crucial for updating economic forecasts. In the US, the non-farm payroll data release will be closely watched for insights into the labor market and its potential influence on the US Federal Open Market Committee's stance ahead of their meeting on January 28-29. These developments are anticipated to shape market sentiment and investment strategies in the coming weeks. For the shortened holiday week, the FBM KLCI extended its winning streak to six days on Tuesday (December 31) and closed 2024 higher by 4.65 points to 1,642.33 compared with Monday’s close of 1,637.68
