Blackhawk School District, which includes several communities just over the state line from the crash site in East Palestine, Ohio, filed the lawsuit on Thursday. that the district is claiming that students and staff members have suffered rashes, eye irritation and respiratory issues from the chemical spill and cloud created during a controlled burn of vinyl chloride.Fearing an explosion that could launch shrapnel up to two miles, authorities decided to burn several railcars carrying vinyl chloride just days after the Feb. 3 derailment.
Nearby residents have complained of skin and respiratory issues, headaches and nausea since the controlled burn. Consequently, Pennsylvania legislators have held multiple hearings concerning the accident and decision to burn the vinyl chloride.
