Bay Area train tracks connecting SF to San Jose could be repurposed to extend Santa Clara VTA's light-rail system after Permanente Cement Plant closed.

When the Bay Area made its big postwar switch from rails to roads, ripping out tracks to smooth the way for cars, the passenger trains from San Francisco to Saratoga and Los Gatos were among the last to fall. They ran from San Francisco to Palo Alto on tracks that Caltrain still uses, then branched onto a secondary route through Los Altos and Cupertino before ending at Vasona in Los Gatos — where Netflix has its headquarters today. The route then continued northeast through Campbell to San Jose.

’s debut in 1972 was a clear sign of the reversal. Another sign was Southern Pacific’s failure to win approval to end its main Peninsula commute service between San Francisco and San Jose. In 1976, SP pitched a vanpool idea that rail historians still ridicule. “Fed up with the cost of hauling a comparatively small number of well-heeled commuters each day, SP offered to buy — get this — 1,000 eight-passenger carpool vans for everyone taking the train,” wrote Classic Trains columnist Kevin P.
