The minute burger staple Becks Prime reopened recently after a lengthy remodel and patio construction, I knew I had to experience it.
Line up to order and pay at the counter. You’ll be given your beverage and a buzzer to alert you when your food is ready. Then find a table in the dining room or on the patio deck out front.Salad stuff on the bottom. On a toasted sesame-seeded bun goes a big swipe of Prime Sauce, the house version of pink mayo-based “secret sauce,” followed by a flock of chopped raw onion squares, a slice of tomato, and a cap of shredded cheddar cheese.
Hat tip to the eggy yellow house-baked buns, too, with their subtle crunch of sesame seeds and cushy texture, with just enough sturdiness to stand up to Becks' imposing patties to the bitter end. This is a very well considered package, despite the off-kilter name. Most excellent, with a steady drip of meat juices mixed with Prime Sauce collecting in the bottom of the paper wrapper that holds things together. The old-school ice cream shakes here are the real deal.
Mention should be made of the cheerful counter service, and of the drive-through option that’s unusual for food of Beck’s quality.Out on the patio, I was treated to some of the cringiest music I’ve been subjected to in ages. I’d call it late 20th-century E-Z listening. It was bad enough to be subjected to “I’m So Into You” by Atlanta Rhythm Section. But when a cover of"God Didn’t Make Them Little Green Apples" came on, my fight or flight instinct kicked in.
