Australians will still be able to enjoy a Bunnings sausage sizzle during a trip to their local store despite a new crackdown on food safety regulations raising concerns over the iconic snack's future.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand will introduce tougher mandates requiring anyone handling food to show proof they have completed an online food safety training course from December.

But Bunnings director of store operations Ben Camire cleared about any concern about the future of the 25-year long tradition, confirming the business would be exempt from the new rules.“As community groups host sausage sizzles at our stores for fundraising and charitable purposes, it’s our understanding they’re exempt from the new safety standards scheduled to come into effect later this year,” he said in a statement.

“The detail can vary depending on their location, but in general this covers the safe handling and preparation of food.” However, the updated Food Standards Code - 3.2.2.A - will have an exemption for volunteer-run events and fundraisers, like the Bunnings sausage sizzle or the democracy sausage enjoyed on election day.
