Building unions fear Coalition plans to create its own construction industry watchdog will scutter newly reached industry deals.
Building unions are urging members to vote for Labor in the NSW election over fears that CoalitionThe Electrical Trades Union NSW is the first building union to reach new industry agreements with major contractors since the Albanese government abolished the Australian Building and Construction Commission and its federal building code, restoring previously banned conditions such as restrictions on the use of labour hire and casuals.
NSW Labor has remained silent over whether it will scrap plans to regulate construction unions, with one source saying it was concerned about negative press linking Labor to the CFMEU during the election. However, in a message to members, ETU NSW secretary Allen Hicks called on sparkies to vote Labor as “some key clauses [in the new deals] may be dependent on the outcome of the NSW election”.
A spokesman for the union said, “no new agreement has been filed in the Fair Work Commission” and “as bargaining is still active it is premature to provide any further comment”.Last week, the Department of Premier and Cabinet wrote to builders to start consultation on what will be in new code, including “any gaps created by the removal of the federal building code of conduct”.
However, a Labor NSW spokesman refrained from explicitly saying whether it would scrap plans to restore an ABCC-like watchdog or replicate the now-scrapped federal code.
