ON Wednesday, over 190 million voters will go to 800,000 polling stations manned by more than six million election workers in the world’s third largest democracy, after India and the United States
The statistics are so mind-boggling that the Indonesian General Election is called “the most complicated single day ballot in global history”.
One single entity is in charge of the whole complex process: Indonesia’s General Election Commission . “Then the economic crisis hit in 1996. When people started to go hungry, the people realised that the wrongdoers were the government but there was no way to control the government. Hadar says that Suharto’s successor, B.J. Habibie, who only stayed on one year after Suharto, fortunately listened to the voices of the people and decided that Indonesia did not have to wait another five years to call for a general election.
Hadar says that a law to reform the KPU was rushed through, specifying that everyone would have a say. The KPU would comprise representatives from all political parties, together with government appointees. Hadar, as a monitor of the elections, says that was when President Habibie was pushed to sign off on the results under the provisions of the law, as people were getting impatient.
“The law was further amended so that Parliament has a role in choosing them. The selection session would be open for public viewing as the Parliamentarians made their pick of commissioners and voted,” he explains. Hadar threw a fit and took the government to court, saying this completely shackled the election commission and was against democracy.
