Speaking in Newry, Tánaiste Micheál Martin said Mr O’Gorman’s proposal was “interesting”
Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman is calling for a “baby boost” of over €500 to be given to parents of newborn babies as part of the budget.
“It's a proposal we'll be bringing forward to the budgetary negotiations over the next number of weeks,” he said. “We're very aware of the extra financial pressures that all new parents face on the arrival of a newborn – New cot, new baby seat, new steriliser, all those really basic but quite expensive pieces of equipment. The idea is that alongside the initial child benefit payment of €140, there'd be a boost for that first payment.
Asked if he would also be in favour of the Child Benefit increasing as part of Budget 2025, as per comments from Tánaiste Micheál Martin last week, Mr O’Gorman stated he believes the baby boost would be “the most meaningful measure the Government can introduce” to target a group of parents. Tensions were also growing within the coalition on Monday about the level of “kite flying” and “shadow boxing” over the last number of days about the budget negotiations. This is despite Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party all making public proclamations about Budget 2025 in recent days. One Government source joked that this may be the “easiest budget yet” for journalists to cover due to the openness of politicians to discuss their wish-lists.
